Hello, I’m Ricarda. I’ve been living in Amsterdam for the past 4 years, and recently moved close to Oosterpark. Foraging seems difficult there, it is very tidy, with lots of dogs and people. I’ve spotted some Elder though which I’ll keep an eye on. Foraging is illegal in the Netherlands, and it depends where you forage whether it’ll be tolerated. I’ve collected some (fallen) branches in Oosterpark for crafting, and people definitely noticed, but no one said anything. But I imagine people might get more involved when someone is trying to touch living plants since they seem to be attending carefully! Since I’m new in the area, I’m still discovering spots. I’ve visited Park Frankendael of course, and some buurttuinen but I don’t know them enough yet to feel comfortable foraging there.
In my new place, we also have a small communal garden. It is quite neglected, but I hope I can work on it and bring in some nice local herbs and plants.
I’m originally from Germany, and I simply love foraging there. I often go with my grandma or aunt who both know a lot. Everything seems a lot more abundant in Germany. But I’m looking forward to learning to pay closer attention in Amsterdam as well.
