I eat about 300 grams of fruits and vegetables a day, more if you also count grains and protein, since I’m vegetarian. It would be pretty difficult to forage this amount, although in the summer it might be possible for a day or so since I do notice that a lot of different weed leaves can be used in salads. To make sure you don’t harvest too much from one place, you would probably need to walk a lot. And you would probably also need a lot of nuts. I’m currently reading a book called ‘Trees of Power’ by Akiva Silver, which argues that the climate change problem could be helped by gathering our food from trees rather than crops, because we wouldn’t have to keep disturbing the soil and releasing co2. I think this is really interesting, and makes me wonder what it would be like if we had more food trees in cities, where everyone could gather food, rather than just seeing them as decoration. In that case I would feel better about foraging more of my food, because it would be more sustainable. There is also a documentary by Agnes Varda, The Gleaners and I, which is really inspiring – about the disappearing gleaning rights, where people used to be allowed to gather leftover crops from the fields, and also following several people who live off of food ‘waste’ in the city for reasons other than poverty. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jn8nHJTb_LY
